The two main arrangement structures in sugar dating. Pay Per Meet (PPM) and monthly allowance. Everyone has a preference. Most people haven't thought carefully about which one actually serves them better.
I've had both kinds of arrangements, multiple times each. Here's what I actually learned.
How each works
PPM (Pay Per Meet): You meet, he pays you a set amount per meeting. Typical range: $200-800 per meet depending on the arrangement, city, and SD. You get paid each time. There's usually no commitment to how often you meet.
Monthly allowance: He pays a set amount at the beginning of each month (or sometimes by date - some do bi-weekly). You meet however many times you agreed to, usually 2-4 times a month. Amount range: $1,500-5,000+ depending on the same factors.
The math
Let's say you meet twice a month.
PPM at $400/meet = $800/month Monthly allowance for twice-a-month arrangement = typically $2,500-3,500/month
Wait, that doesn't make sense. Why would anyone do PPM?
The math only works in PPM's favor if:
- You're uncertain about meeting frequency
- The SD is flaky and might cancel
- You haven't built trust yet
- You're seeing the SD more like 4+ times a month
And the monthly allowance math makes more sense when:
- You've established a reliable SD who shows up
- Meeting frequency is 2x/month or less
- You value consistency over flexibility
Most experienced SBs say this: start PPM, transition to monthly if it's working.
Real experience with PPM
My first real arrangement started PPM. We agreed on $350/meet, met up, it worked out, we did it again. After 3 meets we talked about going monthly.
The advantage: I felt safer. He could have been anyone - flaky, a liar, not what he seemed. Getting paid per meet meant I wasn't owed money after the fact.
The disadvantage: constant renegotiation energy. Every time we met, I had to make sure the money conversation was happening correctly. It added friction.
Also: he was reliable. Once I knew that, PPM started feeling like I was leaving money on the table.
Real experience with monthly
Started going monthly with that same SD. He paid at the start of each month. It felt more like a real arrangement - less transactional, more built into a routine.
The good: no awkward per-meet money exchange. Consistent income I could count on. The dynamic felt more natural.
The bad: one month he paid late. That was uncomfortable. And another month he traveled for 3 weeks and we only met once - but I'd already been paid for a "normal" month. He mentioned it, I felt like I needed to make up for it. Complicated.
What SDs prefer and why
Most SDs prefer monthly allowances, at least eventually. It feels more like a relationship. It removes the per-meet transactionality that makes both people feel weird.
Some SDs prefer PPM because it keeps them flexible. If they travel frequently or have unpredictable schedules, they don't want to be paying for a month when they know they'll only see you twice. Which from your perspective is actually fine if the per-meet rate is high enough.
The negotiation reality
PPM rates and monthly amounts aren't independent. If you're getting $400/meet at PPM and meet 4 times a month, that's $1,600. A monthly rate for 4 meets a month should be closer to $3,000-3,500 because the arrangement structure is different.
Some SBs get lowballed on monthly allowances by SDs who frame it as "well we're meeting 4 times a month so that's $300/meet which is $1,200 total." That math is wrong. Monthly allowance is more than PPM multiplied because:
- You're committing your social time to this person
- You're not seeing other SDs while maintaining this arrangement
- The relationship has more structure and expectations
Starting PPM is smart
For new arrangements, starting PPM makes sense:
- You haven't verified if he's reliable
- You haven't verified if he's who he says he is
- You haven't decided if you want a longer arrangement
- He hasn't verified what you're like in person
After 2-3 meets, you both have better information. If you like each other and he's reliable, that's when to discuss transitioning to monthly.
Most serious SDs understand this and don't push hard to skip PPM. If someone insists on monthly from meet 1 before you've ever seen each other in person, that's a yellow flag.
My recommendation after multiple arrangements
For first arrangements or new SDs: PPM until you've confirmed reliability and chemistry. 2-3 meets minimum before monthly discussion.
Once you trust the SD: Monthly is better financially and emotionally for arrangements where you're meeting 1-3 times a month.
For frequent-meet arrangements (4+ times/month): PPM sometimes makes more sense because the per-meet rate compounds quickly and monthly can get complicated.
For travel arrangements: PPM almost always - too unpredictable to do monthly.
The answer to "which is better" is "it depends on the specific arrangement." What doesn't change: know your numbers before any negotiation, and don't let the framing of one structure make you accept less than you're worth.
